FIU-Latvia Hosts 28th Annual Egmont Group Plenary – “New Ways to Drive FIU Effectiveness in a Risk-Based Environment”

July 14, 2022

The 28th Annual Egmont Group (EG) Plenary, organized this year by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Latvia, will take place July 10-15, 2022. Approximately XXX representatives from FIUs across the globe are expected to attend and contribute to improving international collaboration.

Each Plenary focuses on one central theme, in addition to operational discussions. This year’s theme, New Ways to Drive FIU Effectiveness in a Risk-Based Environment, will be featured throughout the week’s discussions and is the topic for the Plenary’s Heads of FIU (HoFIU) thematic discussion.

One main objective of HoFIU thematic discussions is to produce tangible take-home results, including concrete activities and results for EG-members, FIUs, and partners in the anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) network.

In July 2021, the HoFIU held interactive webinars focusing on FIU opportunities and benefits when adopting a RBA in AML/CFT operations and activities. Further discussion was encouraged due to subject importance and expressed interest.

This July, the 2022 EG Plenary’s HoFIU thematic discussion on New Ways to Drive FIU Effectiveness in a Risk-Based Environment will continue the conversation through three sessions:

Session 1 – Multilateral Information Sharing focuses on multilateral information-sharing mechanisms, specifically complex money laundering and terrorist financing (ML/TF) schemes involving several jurisdictions.

Session 2 – Ways to Set Effective Priorities in Domestic and International Cooperation focuses on governing FIU effectiveness and issues prioritizing FIU activities related to domestic and international cooperation.

Session 3 – Ways to Enhance the Role of the FIU in the Domestic AML/CFT System explores how FIUs can enhance their role as leading AML/CFT authorities.

A compendium detailing key points from the Plenary Thematic Discussion on New Ways to Drive Effectiveness of an FIU in the Risk-Based Environment will be shared after the Plenary.
