Egmont Group Marks International FIU Day on 9 June

Ottawa, 4 June 2026 — The Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units marks International FIU Day on 9 June, recognizing the vital role that Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) play in safeguarding the global financial system and strengthening international cooperation to combat money laundering, terrorist financing, and related financial crimes.

International FIU Day commemorates the founding of the Egmont Group at the Egmont Palace in Brussels on 9 June 1995. The date symbolizes more than three decades of collaboration among FIUs worldwide and reflects a shared commitment to secure information exchange, trust, and collective action.

“Financial Intelligence Units are central to protecting the integrity of the financial system,” said Elżbieta Franków‑Jaśkiewicz, Chair of the Egmont Group. “Every day, FIUs work behind the scenes to analyze financial intelligence, support investigations, and protect societies from criminal abuse. International FIU Day is an opportunity to recognize the professionalism, dedication, and impact of FIU staff across the globe.”

Financial Intelligence Units serve as the central hubs of financial intelligence within their jurisdictions. They receive, analyze, and disseminate financial information to support investigations and disrupt illicit financial flows. Working closely with law enforcement, prosecutors, regulators, and the private sector, FIUs play a critical role in protecting financial integrity and supporting effective outcomes against increasingly complex and cross‑border financial crime.

Today, FIUs operate in a landscape shaped by technological change, global connectivity, and increasingly sophisticated criminal networks. In response, FIUs continue to strengthen analytical capabilities, leverage data‑driven approaches, and deepen cooperation at the national, regional, and international levels to stay ahead of financial crime.

International FIU Day provides an opportunity to recognize the contribution of FIUs as intelligence hubs, to highlight their evolving role in the global AML/CFT framework, and to reinforce the importance of collaboration across borders and sectors.

Through International FIU Day, the Egmont Group reaffirms its mission to foster development, share expertise, and promote effective and secure international cooperation among its members. The Egmont Group Secretariat invites FIUs, partners, and stakeholders to join the global FIU community in recognizing this day and amplifying the message that financial intelligence is a cornerstone of a safer and more transparent global financial system.
