Tanzania’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) Hosts Over Four Hundred Egmont Group Representatives from Around the Globe

Tanzania – The 26th annual Working and Regional Group (WG/RG) Meetings will take place from 26th to 30th January 2026. Over 400 Egmont Group (EG) representatives, international partners, observers and guests will participate in the meetings in Tanzania this year.

As a global organization, with 182-member Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs), the Egmont Group facilitates and encourages the exchange of information, knowledge, and cooperation among its members. It provides a secure platform that allows members to share knowledge, expertise and financial intelligence, thereby strengthening the global fight against money laundering (ML), related predicate offences, and terrorist financing (TF).

The Egmont Group’s initiatives are driven by its four distinct Working Groups: The Information Exchange Working Group, the Membership, Support and Compliance Working Group, the Policy and Procedures Working Group, and the Technical Assistance and Training Working Group. Each group has a specific mandate to support the member FIUs. Additionally, the Regional Groups play a crucial role in promoting development, cooperation, and the exchange of expertise at a regional level.

“This year’s Working and Regional Group meetings in Tanzania bring together our community for a packed program of vital discussions on topics that matter to our member FIUs, including secure information sharing, technology and data matching, and regional AML and CFT insights, typologies, and case studies. These meetings give our members the opportunity to communicate, collaborate, and take decisions that strengthen our collective fight against money laundering, associated predicate crimes, and terrorist financing,” says Mrs. Elżbieta Franków-Jaśkiewicz, Chair of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units.

Delegates are navigating a busy week and working through a full agenda, collaborating on key projects and initiatives, including:

  • Advancing work on the operational independence and autonomy of FIUs and supporting efforts to safeguard these core principles across regions
    • Advancing technology, AI and new IT models across FIUs
    • Strengthening cross regional responses to environmental crime, cyber threats, global risk assessments, PPPs and ML and TF risks
    • Providing updates on the ECOFEL certification program
    • Sharing regional AML and CFT insights, typologies and case studies
    • Reviewing membership applications and implementing the Support and Compliance Process
    • Electing Regional Representatives and Working Group leadership
    • Collaborating with partners including FATF, UNODC and the IMF
    • Organizing a training related to international exposure of FIUs

“Tanzania FIU is privileged and honored to host the Egmont Group Working and Regional Group Meetings in Tanzania. Tanzanians look forward to warmly welcoming all delegates from all corners of the world and the entire Egmont Group membership for productive and very successful meetings, in Tanzania’s friendly and supportive environment”, said Mr. Majaba Shabani Magana, Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of Tanzania FIU.

The Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units extends its gratitude to the host, FIU Tanzania, and the participants who are partaking in this year’s meetings. The success of our initiatives relies heavily on the cooperation and commitment of all members and partners. It takes a collective effort to achieve our common goals of combating money laundering, associated predicate offences, and terrorist financing. The dedication shown by each participant strengthens our information-sharing networks and fortifies our joint resolve to address these global challenges effectively.

Background:

FIUs annually receive thousands of suspicious transaction reports and other reports with links to other countries. Therefore, international partner collaboration is crucial and is the reason why, in 1995, facilitating and promoting information exchanges among FIUs formed the framework for today’s widely recognised and highly respected international organisation, the EG, currently consisting of 182 members and counting.

Associated Links:

The Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units is a global organization formed by 182 member FIUs established to facilitate and prompt the exchange of information, knowledge, and cooperation among its members. The Egmont Group focuses on three core activities. Firstly, its secure Information exchange platform promotes operational cooperation among members. Secondly, the Egmont Group provides capacity-building opportunities through its structure of working groups along with its Capacity Building Program (ECOFEL). Thirdly, the Egmont Group enhances shared knowledge and expertise among members by regularly producing typology reports, red flags, and indicators.

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) of Tanzania was established under Section 4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2006 (AMLA) to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing. It became fully operational in September 2007, and it became member of Egmont in June 2014.

The FIU plays a critical role in Tanzania’s efforts to combat money laundering, associated predicate offences and terrorist financing. Preventing, detecting and combating these crimes is essential in safeguarding the integrity of the economy and positioning Tanzania as an attractive investment destination.
