Luxembourg – Marking the 30th Anniversary of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units, the annual Egmont Group Plenary convenes from July 6 to 11, 2025 this year. Over five hundred-fifty delegates from the Egmont Group, international partners, and observers worldwide are participating and contributing to meetings and the Plenary in Luxembourg. We extend our gratitude to the Luxembourg Financial Intelligence Unit for graciously hosting this milestone event.
The Egmont Group of FIUs was established in 1995 at the Egmont Palace in Brussels, Belgium. Initially, it was an informal network of 13 national Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) aimed at facilitating cooperation and intelligence sharing to combat money laundering and terrorist financing (ML/TF). Over the years, the Egmont Group has grown significantly and now includes 177 member FIUs from around the world.
Today, the Egmont Group stands as a testament to international collaboration, providing a secure platform for information exchange, capacity building, and knowledge enhancement among its member FIUs.
The Egmont Group’s Plenary focuses on one central theme: Egmont Group at 30: The future of international coordination in AML and CFT. This theme is consistent with the current Egmont Group Strategic Plan and would enable a forward-looking reflection on the adaptations of FIUs inherent to the coming decade. This theme, featured throughout the week’s meeting discussions, echo’s other efforts within the Egmont Group to adapt to the challenges facing FIUs worldwide and to enhance the procedures and capabilities of the Group to best support members ambitions in the coming decade.
“As we celebrate 30 years of the Egmont Group, we reflect on our journey from a network of 13 FIUs to a global organization of 177 members. This growth reflects our shared commitment to international collaboration and capacity building. The theme of our Plenary, ‘Egmont Group at 30: The future of international coordination in AML and CFT,’ underscores our forward-looking approach.” says Ms. Elżbieta Franków-Jaśkiewicz, Chair of the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units. “We are grateful to the Luxembourg Financial Intelligence Unit for graciously hosting this milestone event and look forward to the fruitful discussions and collaborations that will shape the future of our collective efforts.”
The Egmont Group is deeply honoured to welcome a distinguished delegation of high-level dignitaries to the upcoming Plenary. We are especially privileged by the presence of His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Guillaume, whose participation underscores the importance of our collective mission. We are equally honoured to host Ms. Elisabeth Margue, Minister of Justice, and Mr. Gilles Roth, Minister of Finance, whose leadership and support are instrumental to the success of this event.
In addition, we are proud to welcome a number of eminent international figures, including:
– Ms. Elisa de Anda Madrazo, President of the FATF
– Ms. Bruna Szego, Chair of AMLA
– Mr. Juan Manuel Vega Serrano, Vice-Chair of AMLA
– Ms. Laura Codruța Kövesi, European Chief Prosecutor and Head of the EPPO
– Ms. Brigitte Strobel-Shaw, representing the UNODC
– Ms. Xolisile Khanyile, Chair of United for Wildlife Financial Taskforce
– Mr. Mariano Federici, Senior Managing Director of K2 Integrity
– Professor Chris Brummer, Georgetown University
Their presence reflects the global commitment to strengthening financial integrity and international cooperation.
As one of the Egmont Group’s founding members, Luxembourg has consistently demonstrated its commitment to advancing international cooperation in anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing. We are especially grateful for their continued support and leadership in hosting this milestone 30th anniversary Plenary.
“International cooperation is a cornerstone of the Luxembourg Financial Intelligence Unit’s (CRF) mission. The CRF is therefore deeply honored to host the Egmont Group’s Working Groups, Regional Groups, and Plenary meetings in Luxembourg. The Egmont Group connects the CRF with over 170 counterparts worldwide, serving as a vital platform for effective global collaboration in the fight against money laundering and terrorist financing. The CRF looks forward to welcoming its international partners—both to advance this important work together and to showcase the country’s unique energy, innovation, and beauty.” – Max Braun, Director of Cellule de Renseignement Financier – CRF
This year’s thematic discussion topic will be organized into three key Plenary sessions:
Session 1: FIU autonomy and operational independence
Session 2: Resourcing the fight against illicit finance
Session 3: Future Egmont Secure Web
Throughout the week, the Egmont Group will also hold a variety of meetings for its four working groups and eight regional groups, in addition to offering operational training sessions. FIU Luxembourg (CRF) will offer thematic workshops on a range of topics, including operational public-private partnerships and data analysis. Asset recovery will be discussed during a workshop led by the Council of Europe. A dedicated workshop on data analysis in French will be available, supporting broader linguistic and regional engagement.
A highlight of the week will be the annual Best Egmont Case Award (BECA) Competition. Led by the Technical Assistance and Training Working Group, this initiative encourages Egmont Group member FIUs to showcase cases where the exchange of financial intelligence has directly contributed to successful money laundering or terrorist financing investigations. Each year, two finalists are selected, and the winner is chosen by a panel of judges during the Egmont Group Plenary.
As per the Egmont Group Charter, the HoFIU convenes annual Plenary meetings for members, observers, and international partners that are strategic, decision-oriented, and consequential to the Egmont Group community and beyond. In particular, the HoFIU thematic discussions aim to produce tangible take-home results, including concrete activities and results for Egmont Group members, FIUs, and partners in the AML/CFT network.

Background:
FIUs annually receive thousands of suspicious transaction reports and other reports with links to other countries. Therefore, international partner collaboration is crucial and is the reason why, in 1995, facilitating and promoting information exchanges among FIUs formed the framework for today’s widely recognised and highly respected international organisation, the Egmont Group, currently consisting of 177 members and counting.
Associated Links:
The Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units is a global organization formed by 177 member FIUs established to facilitate and prompt the exchange of information, knowledge, and cooperation among its members. The Egmont Group focuses on three core activities. Firstly, its secure Information exchange platform promotes operational cooperation among members. Secondly, the Egmont Group provides capacity-building opportunities through its structure of working groups along with its Capacity Building Program (ECOFEL). Thirdly, the Egmont Group enhances shared knowledge and expertise among members by regularly producing typology reports, red flags, and indicators.
The Cellule de renseignement financier (CRF) serves as Luxembourg’s national center for receiving and analyzing suspicious transaction reports and other information related to money laundering, associated predicate offenses, and terrorist financing. The CRF also disseminates relevant findings to competent authorities and cooperates internationally in accordance with Egmont Group principles and EU directives.
