The 29th annual Egmont Group (EG) Plenary, organized and hosted by the United Arab Emirates Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), continues until July 7, 2023. This year’s event boasts one of the highest participation rates in the EG’s history, with over 500 FIU representatives, Observers, and International Partners from across the globe participating and contributing to improving international collaboration.
The EG Plenary focuses on one central theme. This year’s theme, Use of Advanced IT Technologies by FIUs to Enhance their Operations, supports the 2022-2027 EG Strategic Plan’s vision and aspiration to ensure that the EG and its members can respond to and embrace new forms of information sharing driven by technology, and new ways of working. The theme is featured throughout the week’s meeting discussions and is the topic for the Plenary’s final Heads of FIU (HoFIU) thematic discussion on Thursday, July 6, 2023.
Special guest, His Excellency Khaled Mohammed Balama Al Tameemi, Governor of the Central Bank, opens the 2023 EG Plenary’s thematic discussion, followed by remarks from the Head of UAE Financial Intelligence Unit, Ali Faisal Ba’Alawi and Chair of the EG and Director of the Financial Intelligence Centre of South Africa, Xolisile Khanyile.
This year’s thematic discussion topic will be divided into three sessions:
Session 1 – Use of privacy-enhancing technologies to enhance FIU’s intelligence production output and engagement (domestically and internationally)
Session 2 – Use of artificial intelligence to enhance FIU operations, creative collaboration models, and strategic effectiveness
Session 3 – Use of blockchain technology to enhance FIU operations
As per the EG Charter, the HoFIU convene annual Plenary meetings for members, observers, and international partners that are strategic, decision-oriented, and consequential to the EG community and beyond. In particular, the HoFIU thematic discussions aim to produce tangible take-home results, including concrete activities and results for EG members, FIUs, and partners in the anti-money laundering and counter-financing of terrorism network.
After the event, a compendium detailing the Thematic Discussion’s critical points will be shared publicly.
