Egmont Group Rises to the Occasion at COP-29: Using Financial Intelligence to Combat Environmental Crimes

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 15, 2024 – The Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) is thrilled to announce its participation in COP-29 on November 16, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. We will be hosting two crucial sessions that will bring together leading executives, experts and stakeholders to discuss and address the vital role of financial intelligence in supporting the global efforts to combat the negative effects of anthropogenic climate change.

We are honoured to have with us the Egmont Group Vice-Chair and Executive Secretary, the executives of UNODC and INTERPOL, and the Heads of FIU Azerbaijan and South Africa delivering their insightful remarks. We will also benefit from the expertise of subject matter experts from UNODC and FIU Azerbaijan .

Session 1: Opportunities for financial intelligence to contribute to the global efforts in tackling anthropogenic climate change will be moderated by Mr. Mohammed Shahid Ahmed, Egmont Group Vice-Chair, and will include keynote addresses from distinguished speakers such as:

  • Opening remarks – Mr. Zaur Fatizada – Head of FIU Azerbaijan and Mr. Mohammed Shahid Ahmed – Vice-Chair of Egmont Group
  • Keynote speech – Ms. Ghada Fathi Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
  • Major General Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, President of INTERPOL
  • Jerome Beaumont, Executive Secretary, Egmont Group
  • Mr. Pieter Smit, Acting Head of FIU South Africa

Session 2: The role of FIUs and their law enforcement partners in the fight against environmental crime will be moderated by Mr. Azer Abbasov, Deputy Head of FIU Azerbaijan, and will include keynote addresses from distinguished speakers such as:

  • Fabrizio Fioroni – AML/CFT expert at UNODC:
  • Pieter Smit – Acting Head of FIU South Africa
  • Fuad Aliyev – International Cooperation Director of FIU Azerbaijan

This event, along with the participation of our esteemed speakers, underscores our collective commitment to fostering international cooperation and strengthening the global fight against financial crimes including predicate crimes such as the case with environmental crimes. It will also focus on possible opportunities for the use of financial intelligence to support the global efforts to fight the negative effects of anthropogenic climate change.
